Los administradores de sistemas muchas veces se habrán encontrado con la necesidad de acceder o controlar servidores y equipos con diferentes sistemas operativos. Claro que acceder a estos equipos muchas veces no suele ser sencillo por que se encuentran ubicados en centros de cálculo o en racks donde dificilmente es posible llegar y mucho menos disponer de un monitor y teclado.
Para estas circunstancias existen dos clases de soluciones, las basadas en hardware, que suelen utilizarse en centros de cálculo y que conectan físicamente los servidores a un switcher que contiene un monitor, un teclado y un ratón y que mediante una combinación de teclas se accede a un equipo u otro. Y las basadas en software, que mediante protocolo tcp/ip, logran acceder a servidores ubicados incluso geográficamente dispersos.
Synergy, es una solución basada en software libre que mediante tcp/ip permite compartir teclado, ratón y monitor entre diferentes equipos incluso con diferentes sistemas operativos. La ventaja es inmensa por que desde cualquier sitio es posible acceder a los servidores.
Facilmente se puede realizar copy-pase entre los sistemas, sincronizar salvapantallas, para uno o para todos, e incluso bloquear pantallas y solicitar password para desbloquear todas a la vez.
