Con sólo el coste de las licencias de servidor de Windows es posible adquirir el hardware necesario para montar una máquina con un servidor linux, Samba y entorno de código abierto. Samba está disponible libre de coste y existen versiones para versiones comerciales de unix, incluidos IBM AIX, HP-UX y solaris.
